Deck and fence staining, on Colorado's schedule.
A deck in Arvada takes full afternoon sun with nothing in the way. Sealed on time it is maintenance. Left too long it becomes a lumber bill.
Bighorn Painting stains decks, fences, railings and pergolas throughout Arvada, Colorado. Wood is cleaned, brightened to restore the pH after cleaning, sanded where the grain has raised, and sealed with a penetrating stain chosen for Colorado sun and freeze-thaw. Horizontal deck surfaces get stain rather than paint, because film-forming products peel on surfaces that take standing water and foot traffic. Call 720-912-4676.
The water test, which takes ten seconds
Pour a cup of water on your deck boards. If it beads up and sits there, the seal is still doing its job. If it soaks in and darkens the wood, your deck is absorbing every rainstorm and every snowmelt, and the clock has started.
In Arvada that moment comes faster than most homeowners expect. We are on the open west side with full afternoon exposure, and a deck here often needs attention in two to three years where a shaded one in a tree-covered neighborhood might go four or five.
Three steps before any stain
- Clean. Remove the gray surface layer, mildew and old failing product. Gray wood is UV-damaged fiber, and stain applied over it bonds to a layer that is already letting go.
- Brighten. Deck cleaners are alkaline and leave the wood chemically off-balance. A brightener restores the pH so the stain penetrates evenly instead of blotching.
- Sand where needed. Cleaning raises the grain. Sanding knocks it back so the surface is smooth underfoot and the stain goes on uniformly.
Skipping the brightening step is the most common shortcut, and it is why some deck jobs come out patchy for no visible reason.
Stain, not paint, on anything horizontal
Paint forms a film sitting on top of the wood. On a deck surface taking snow load, standing water and foot traffic, that film eventually fails, and when it does you are looking at a full strip before anything else can happen. Stain soaks into the wood instead. It wears away rather than peeling, which makes the next cycle a clean-and-recoat rather than a removal project.
If your deck is already painted, we can work with it, but you should know what you inherited.
Picking a transparency
| Type | Grain | Cycle | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transparent | Fully visible | Shortest | New cedar or redwood you want to show off |
| Semi-transparent | Mostly visible | Medium | Most Arvada decks. The sensible default |
| Semi-solid | Texture only | Longer | Older wood with uneven color to even out |
| Solid | Hidden | Longest look | Fences and weathered wood. Hardest to undo later |
Fences, which are mostly about math
Fence work is priced by linear foot and by whether both sides are being done. A long run along a greenbelt or a shared property line adds up fast, so it is worth deciding early whether you are doing the whole perimeter or just the sections people see. We will quote it either way without pushing.

How often should I stain my deck in Arvada?
Use water rather than a calendar. When it stops beading and starts soaking in, it is time. On Arvada's west-facing exposure that is commonly every two to three years, sooner on decks with no shade at all.
Why did my deck stain peel?
Usually one of three things: a film-forming product used on a horizontal surface, stain applied over wood that was still damp, or stain applied over an old sealer it could not penetrate. All three trap moisture underneath.
Can you stain a brand-new deck?
Sometimes, but new pressure-treated lumber often needs to dry out first. We check moisture content and follow the product's guidance rather than guessing, because sealing wet lumber causes problems later.
Should I paint my deck instead of staining it?
On the walking surface, we would advise against it. Paint forms a film that eventually peels and has to be stripped entirely. Stain penetrates and wears away, which keeps every future maintenance cycle simple.
Do you do fences too?
Yes, including cedar privacy fence, split rail and the long greenbelt runs common in west Arvada. Fences are priced by linear foot and by whether both sides are included.
What about boards that are already rotten?
We flag loose boards, popped fasteners and rot at the estimate. Small repairs are handled in the project and larger carpentry is quoted separately so the number stays honest.
